„In west Philadelphia born and raised…“ Fast jeder dürfte diese Zeile kennen. Der Prinz von Bel-Air Theme-Song gehört schließlich zu den bekanntesten Hits der Fernsehgeschichte. Doch kaum einer kennt die Story dahinter. Wusstet ihr, dass Will Smith nur 15 Minuten brauchte, um die Lyrics zu schreiben?
DJ Jazzy Jeff war maßgeblich an der Entstehung des Intros beteiligt. „Ich erinnere mich, dass wir auf auf Tour (1990) einen Tag frei hatten“, verriet er im Interview mit der ‚Entertainment Weekly‘. „Will sagte, ‚Hey, ich muss ins nächste Flugzeug nach L.A. springen, weil ich für eine TV-Show vorsprechen soll.‘ 24 Stunden später kam er zurück und sagte, ‚Hey, ich habe die Show bekommen‘.“
Bis dahin hatte sich Smith als Rapper verdingt. Das Duo „DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince“ machte sich einen Namen in Philadelphia und gewann sogar zwei Grammys. Allerdings bewegte sich Smith damals nah am Rand einer Pleite. Dass ihm die Rolle in „Der Prinz von Bel-Air“ angeboten wurde, war insofern ein glücklicher Umstand, der seiner ganzen Karriere eine neue Richtung geben sollte.
Serienerfinder Andy Borowitz sagt, dass der Sender ganz angetan war von dem jungen Rapper, als sie ihn im Video zu „Parents Just Don’t Understand“ sahen, das dem späteren Theme schon recht ähnlich war. Da der Pilot schnell abgedreht werden sollte, war nicht viel Zeit, einen passenden Theme-Song auszutüfteln. „Wahrscheinlich schrieben sie den Theme Song über Nacht. Es passierte sehr schnell.“
Jazzy Jeff: „Wir gingen ins Studio und erstellten den Theme Song buchstäblich in vielleicht 15 Minuten. Will sagte immer, dass der härteste Teil sei, ein Konzept zu seinem Song zu finden, doch das Konzept hinter dem ‚Fresh Prince of Bel Air‘ stand bereits fest. Ich ging rein, programmierte bisschen Musik, und er schrieb etwas und nahm es auf. Ich stellte einen Roh-Mix zusammen und schickte ihn ein. Drei Wochen später lief er auf NBC.“
Bis heute bauen Will Smith und DJ Jazzy Jeff den Track in ihre Interviews und Sets mit ein, einfach weil jeder ihn so gern hört. Eines der größten Erlebnisse für Jazzy war, als sie den Song im Rahmen von Live Aid vor einer Million Menschen in ihrer Heimatstadt Philadelphia performten. „Eine Million Menschen sangen mit. Es spielt keine Rolle, wo du dich in der Welt befindest. Wenn du den Theme Song vor 50.000 Leuten an einem Strand in Singapur anspielst, dann singt jeder mit.“
