Nur zwei Tage nachdem die Golden Globes in Los Angeles verliehen wurden, gaben Natalie Dormer und Letitia Wright die Nominierungen für die BAFTA Film Awards bekannt. Diese gehören zu den wichtigsten Preisverleihungen in der Filmindustrie und werden am 18. Februar in der Royal Albert Hall in London vergeben.
Der Spitzenreiter unter den Nominierten ist „The Shape of Water“ von Regisseur Guillermo del Toro. Insgesamt 12 Nominierungen konnte der Film mit Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg und Octavia Spencer einstreichen, unter anderem in den Kategorien Bester Film, Bester Regisseur, Beste Hauptdarstellerin, Beste Nebendarstellerin und Bestes Drehbuch.
8 Normierungen kann „Dunkirk“ aufweisen. Christopher Nolan ist als bester Regisseur nominiert und außerdem geht der Streifen zusammen mit „Call Me by Your Name“, „Darkest Hour“, „The Shape of Water“ und „Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri“ ins Rennen um den besten Film.
Nachdem der langjährige Host Stephen Fry (er führte seit 2001 12-Mal durch die Show) bekanntgab, sich von den BAFTAs zurückziehen, wurde am Dienstag Joanna Lumley als seine Nachfolgerin bekanntgegeben.
